A whole new world

Category: Andy Lau News — admin @ 9:44 am

According to Wu, more than 30 foreign students have participated in the Chinese corner. One exchange student from the Technological University of Panama, Aladino Alvarado, and a freshman from Indonesia, Lukas Ariawan, have even served as hosts.

One recent corner saw Alvarado launching into a rendition of the popular Chinese song “The Thing You Don’t Know,” with Ariawan accompanying him on the guitar. Alvarado’s excellent performance and fluent Chinese won him a wave of applause from the audience.

“I’ve really come to love Chinese songs – my favorite singer now is the Taiwanese star Lee Hom,” the 20-year-old Alvarado said. “Just learning from a book is so boring – movies and pop culture provide so many more windows into the language.”

As an exchange student on a yearlong program, Alvarado is taking advantage of every opportunity to learn as much Chinese as possible before returning home.

“We’ve done so many different kinds of activities in the corner – we even held a cooking class where we learned to make different kinds of Chinese dishes,” Alvarado said. “We were cooking and singing Chinese folk songs – it was like a brand-new world opened up for me.”

Ariawan said his favorite part of Chinese corner was teaching the Chinese students about his home culture of Indonesia via traditional games and other activities. In exchange, he took the opportunity to learn a few Chinese dance moves from his language partners.

Not everyone has such a glowing opinion of the Chinese corner, however. Park Junsung, 27, an exchange student from Dong-Eui University in South Korea, doesn’t think that the party atmosphere suits his language-learning goals.

“All the singing, dancing and chatting just isn’t doing it for me,” he said.
